MTConnect Standard for Machine Tools Drives Sustainable Manufacturing for US DoD

Keywords: US Code Title 10, Aerospace, Machine Tools, MTConnect.

The US Department of Defense (DoD) Title 10 Code for the Armed Forces reissued in January 2011 incorporated a statute that is beginning to impact the manufacturing sector for equipment suppliers to the national defense. As paraphrased from Section 2521 Manufacturing Technology Program of the Title 10 Code: "The Secretary of Defense will utilize this program to provide centralized guidance to Defense Agencies on all matters relating to manufacturing technology." The Title 10 program has been taken on as strategic initiative to further DoD activities and policies that promote the development and application of advanced technologies to manufacturing processes, tools, and equipment. While the program does not include specific metrics, it is intended to "…improve the manufacturing quality, productivity, technology, and practices of busi-nesses and workers providing goods and services to the DoD."

According to ARC Advisory Group's sources, this well-funded gov-ernment program been used as a vehicle to identify technologies, standards and solutions that will function as enablers to achieve the Title 10 goals. On the surface, the goals appear to be too broad to drive results. However, the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) along with the Air Force's initiative for Sustainable Aerospace Manufacturing have focused on technology to improve production operations employing CNC machine tools.
