Environmental Concerns and Regulations Fuel Growth
According to the EPA a continuous emissions monitoring system (CEMS) is the total equipment necessary for the determination of a gas or particulate matter concentration or emission rate using pollutant analyzer measurements and a conversion equation, graph, or computer program to produce results in units of the applicable emission limitation or standard.
The CEMS market grew with the enactment and enforcement of environmental regulations around the world. With many small-scale manufacturers, the total number of suppliers in this market is quite large. Many of those suppliers developed from laboratory measuring equipment and off-line analyzer businesses. Some others are major control system suppliers.
In the US, lack of enforcement has been a major cause of decline in growth of the CEMS market in recent years. This is likely to change with the start of a new administration in 2009.
There is a need for new and innovative measuring technologies and automatic maintenance procedures to lower the total cost of ownership of CEMS.
Strategic Issues
In order for a supplier to take advantage of the many opportunities that are available in this growing market, it is crucial to determine the appropriate strategic business plan. The following are some of the key strategic issues for success of the suppliers who deal with the CEMS market:
- Offer mercury emission monitoring systems
- Offer predictive emission monitoring systems
- Grow your business in incinerator emission monitoring
- Utilize the opportunities in China and India
