NAMUR General Assembly 2011 Explores the Future of Automation – Part 1

Keywords: NAMUR, PCS, DCS, Advanced Applications, APC, MPC

The theme of the NAMUR 2011 General Assembly in November was "Automation, Ways into the Future." Working groups shared their know-how and efforts to document and recommend best practices in plenary lectures and many workshops. Many plenary lectures and breakout sessions provided valuable, practical recommendations for users and requirements for the provider community. In this report ARC Advisory Group discusses the contributions, which all share the common theme of differentiation of user requirements and provider offerings.

Developments within NAMUR
The NAMUR general assembly enjoyed record participation, with around 550 attendees. In his last opening speech, president Kuschnerus announced he would step down. NAMUR continues to increase its international role through the NAMUR branch of China, driven by the Chinese members; by contributions by international guests, EEMUA; and through sister organizations WIB and EXERA. NAMUR concluded a new cooperation agreement with EXERA this year and the sister organizations plan to meet to discuss how to improve cooperation further. NAMUR, which is financially independent, continues to put pressure on automation providers to converge wireless standards and started organizing work group leader meetings to stimulate innovation.
