Brazil:  Great Expectations

Keywords: Brazil, BRIC, Ethanol, Pre-Salt, Energy, Flex Fuel, Automotive Companies.

Brazil represents one of the bright spots in the world when it comes to economic expansion. It has been moving from a country mostly known for agricultural products to one that now includes robust oil & gas, mining & metals, hydroelectric, ethanol, chemicals, pulp & paper, automotive, and aircraft industries.

Brazil has a lot in common with the other BRIC countries. Brazil is a large country with a large population (over 190 million) and many natural resources, including both oil and gas. Brazil's total GDP for 2011 is expected to be $2.3 trillion, which makes it the seventh largest economy globally, yet it's GDP per capita of $11,846 makes it 75th globally in this metric.

The world expects a lot from Brazil. Being one of the bright spots creates pressure to help grow the world economies, as well as its own. Automation and IT suppliers -- many who have made commitments to supply solutions to industrial companies in Brazil -- also expect much of the country. At the recent Brazil Automation ISA 2011, it was apparent to ARC Advisory Group that many exhibitors were excited about the future, while a bit cautious concerning their ability to meet their companies' expectations. Global companies look to grow their businesses, and with few places in the world currently doing well; the pressure on their offices in Brazil (as well as in the other BRIC countries) can be tremendous.
