Global Manufacturing Sector Contracts in November

Keywords:Automation, Capacity Utilization, Industrial Production, Productivity.

The developments in manufacturing climates – both regionally and globally – has shifted significantly since the last iteration of this quarterly ARC Advisory Group Insight, released in late September. At that time, the global manufacturing market was barely keeping its head above wa-ter and generated a PMI of 50.1 in August. The strength in the Asian manufacturing sector helped compensate for the weakness in the US and European markets and was the only factor preventing the global manufacturing economy from slipping into contraction.

Today, weakness in the European market has worsened to an alarming degree, the Asian market has sputtered, and the US finds itself as the strongest performing region. However, this is more the result of Asia and Europe losing ground, than the US moving forward. Overall, the global economy has slipped into contraction.

Purchasing managers indexes (PMIs) provide a good barometer of overall health in the manufacturing and automation markets. PMIs typically in-clude data such as production level, new orders, supplier deliveries, inventories, and employment level. A PMI reading below 50 indicates a general contraction in manufacturing; a reading above 50 indicates expan-sion.
